We are practicing with the Safety Pin Frame and Lacing Frame. After this, we are going to exchange our frames.

I am working with the Knobless Cylinders. I am exploring the different patterns and progressions I can make with these boxes.

Garden Work Day in Emeryville

The Emeryville children would like to say thank you to all the parents (and grandparents) who came to school to pitch in during our garden work day earlier this month! There was weeding and thinning of the bulb beds, amending and turning the soil in the boxes, transplanting the fragrant herbs into the sensorial garden, building a new child-sized bench, re-staining and varnishing the bridge and picnic tables and benches, cleaning out the tool shed, planting spring  vegetable seeds, and building a new bird-and-squirrel resistant screen for one of the vegetable beds! Since then, we have been inspired to plant some more seedlings ourselves in the lower beds!

Oregano, thyme and rosemary are growing in the sensorial garden.

We are enjoying the new bench under the redwood tree.

 Be careful! The varnish is very sticky.

The day wouldn't be complete without a wagon ride. 

Now we are planting more seeds!

Today in the San Mateo Children's House, we celebrated St. Patrick's Day.

Many of us wore green...

We listened to Irish music and practiced dancing jigs...

We also listened to a story about St. Patrick and learned about his good works.

Science Fair Experiments in the EK/HS Program

Getting Ready for Science Fair and Springtime at the Farm

Spring is here, and that means that we are busy with science fair experiments in the EK. It's always exciting to come in every day and work on our experiments and all of the many aspects of this project.

 Here, a student is checking her experiment, recording observations in her science notebook.

 Two students work together on soldering material for an experiment.

Last week, we went to the Farm for the first time in 2015! We worked for about three hours, and everything is so green and lush after the winter. However, the farmers are very worried as we have had so little rain over the winter season compared to the normal volume of rainfall needed.

Lunch break after weeding all morning. We enjoyed lying in the warm sunshine.

A quick stop at San Gregorio beach on the way home.
