Winter Open House in the Emeryville CH

We were so grateful to all the parents and grandparents who came to our Winter Open House!
We had so much fun preparing the fruitcakes and gingerbread cookies, and sewing our ornaments, and practicing our songs, and when the day finally arrived, we were excited to show our families our work and present them with our gifts of ornaments, baked goods, and voices raised in song.
Happy Holidays to all of you from the children (and teachers) of the Emeryville Children's House!

A Day in the Life: Emeryville Children's House

This week, we have been sewing ornaments to give to our parents on the last day of the term. I am sewing sequins onto the felt. They look just like tiny ornaments on the tree. This needle is very sharp, but no one got poked because we were all so careful!

After we sew the sequins onto the felt pieces, we stitch the two halves together to make a little pillow. I am stuffing my ornament with soft craft filling.

My ornament is done and ready to hang up. All of our ornaments will decorate the classroom until the end of our open house next week, when we will give them to our parents. The hook is too high for me to reach. Please help me?

A Work of Heart: Painting our Christmas Canvases!

Students at the Emeryville campus love to paint, from the tempera colors we introduce in the Infant Community to the watercolor and acrylics used by the Children's House and Elementary. When a Montessori colleague suggested that small paintings might be an ideal gift for our students to give their parents, we were all immediately excited.
Our first step was to set a stage in our own minds for our work. We are only days away from the longest night of the year, and so we primed our canvases with Mars Black. This would make the colors we added later shine like jewels in the night.

Some of the children wanted to create a smooth, even surface; others were more interested in a thick impasto and experimenting with different brush strokes.

When the canvases were dry, it was time to add our colors. We selected a deep forest green, red, white, gold, and copper for the holiday project. The children discovered that, adding the metallic gold or copper to the white, red, or green added iridescence along with a shift in color. Word spread quickly after a first student's lucky accident that blending red and copper with a little white made a luminescent rose hue that many of the students wanted to try to replicate.

Christmas trees (both indoor and outdoor) were a popular theme, but we were surprised to hear some of the stories the children told us about their paintings. One boy described the sea lions he saw on the beach on a trip with his parents down the coast; another child pointed to an abstract swirl of copper in a white corner and said her grandfather was making "snow angels" for her underneath the trees.

Now that our canvases our dry, we are ready to wrap them.
The children are so proud of what they have created, and so excited to present their parents with these gifts, that it has been difficult to convince them that we must wait until Friday!

A Day in the Life: San Mateo Erdkinder "Holiday Faire"

Getting Ready for the "Holiday Faire" in the EK!

We have been super busy in the Erdkinder this week making all sorts of wonderful items for the holiday faire which will be happening this afternoon and tomorrow morning in the PRINTS yard. The students have made holiday cards, ornaments, baked goods, jewelry and many other unique items.

Our baked goods above - we learned that presentation is very important and improves our ability to sell our wares!

We used many pretty baskets to show-off our holiday cards and items crafted from beautiful paper.

Here, Adrienne and Lena are putting finishing touches to ornament-making

An example of a hand-made greeting card - just one of many inventive cards that you can buy!

Please come and support us! We hope to see you there, and wish you a wonderful holiday season!

A Day in the Life: San Mateo Children's House

I'm coloring the Puzzle Map of Europe and then I will label all the countries.
I'm rolling up the clean laundry for the classroom so that my friends can use clean towels.
This is the cube of 7 chain. I'm counting all the beads.
I've put together the Puzzle Map of Asia and I'm checking to make sure I put everything in its proper place.
We are practicing something special for our Winter Celebration on Friday!
This is going to be a nice surprise for our guests!
