Japanese Children's Day: San Mateo

Thursday, May 5 is Japanese Children's Day, but we celebrated on Tuesday, May 3!

We are making mochi balls as part of our lunch today!

Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped with our special bento lunch today!

Our lunch was so delicious!

We all sat outside and learned about mochi pounding before the demonstration.

Sensei is helping us put rice into the mochi mortar.

We have to add water to the rice before we pound it, as well as during the pounding!

Now we pound the rice and water with the pestle!

Children's House, Elementary, and Erdkinder students all helped!

The mochi is then transferred to a tray of flour and ready to be made into a delicious treat!

We then participated in sumo!

Then we played games. I'm making a funny face!

We also played ring toss.

There was even a ball toss game.

We all took turns taking funny photos.
